Every project has its narrative, and the Anchor Bar assignment was no different. Commissioned by a general contractor (GC) to repair concrete and apply a polymer flake epoxy system in the bar and storage area of the new Anchor Bar restaurant, it was clear this task would present its own set of challenges. The project began with a simple principle in mind: quality should never be compromised, even if it means deviating from standard practices.
During initial discussions with the GC, the focus was on demonstrating the advantages of epoxy flooring and the expertise behind the work. The conversation expanded beyond the small bar area to include the commercial kitchen. The kitchen floor was in dire need of attention, neglected over time and showing layers of old stains, grease, and dirt. Despite a detailed bid that underscored the benefits of epoxy—ease of cleaning and exceptional durability—the concern over costs led the GC to consider cheaper alternatives.
Ultimately, the decision was made to proceed only with the bar area. The result was a flawless black carbon-colored flake floor, showcasing some of the finest workmanship. However, shortly after, the restaurant owner reached out directly, requesting a bid for the kitchen floor. He expressed frustration with the cost-cutting measures that had delayed the restaurant's opening and left the kitchen floor in poor condition.
Understanding the urgency, work began on the kitchen floor the very next day. This involved an unusual task of disconnecting and removing all kitchen equipment to meet the tight timeline. Commercial degreasers, floor buffers, and scrubbers were used repeatedly to cleanse the floor thoroughly. Following this, a diamond grind removed the top concrete layer, ensuring a perfect bond for the epoxy.
The floor preparation continued meticulously with hand grinding of edges and cleaning of stem walls. An application of EpoxyRocks!® Moisture Mitigation Epoxy followed, with custom-colored polymer flakes broadcast to full coverage. This technique ensured enhanced durability and a seamless finish. Once dry, the floor was lightly hand-scraped to preserve texture before applying a polyaspartic topcoat and a final ceramic coating for maximum durability and ease of cleaning.
The transformation of the kitchen floor was remarkable. The restaurant owner and general manager were elated with the results, praising the quality of the work. They even hinted at honoring the work with a menu item and mentioned potential future projects across their 30 restaurants nationwide.
Reflecting on this experience highlights the importance of adaptability and trust in the construction industry. By prioritizing quality and fostering strong relationships, the project not only met but exceeded expectations, resulting in a lasting partnership. This endeavor illustrates the occasional need to bend the rules to achieve excellence. It remains a cherished story, a testament to dedication, craftsmanship, and the power of enduring relationships.
